In 1519, the famed Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived in the wealthy capital of the Aztec Empire, Tenochtitlan. Emperor Montezuma II welcomed the “white-skinned gods” with a grand celebration, offering gold and silver in hopes of sparing his city.

But the greedy Spaniards betrayed their hosts, capturing Montezuma and, with the help of local allies, looted Tenochtitlan and massacred much of its population. The Aztecs rose in revolt, and amidst the chaos, Montezuma was killed. Forced to flee, the Spaniards abandoned the city—and their stolen treasures—in a desperate bid to save their lives.

During their retreat, the conquistadors dumped Montezuma’s legendary treasure into the depths of Lake Texcoco. Cortés returned a year later and conquered the entire Aztec Empire, but the treasure was never found. Some say it still lies beneath the lake…
But according to legend, after Montezuma’s death, two thousand Aztec warriors retrieved the treasure and, with their fallen king’s body, disappeared into the north, never to be seen again.
